What's a Wine Box Ceremony?

Well the short answer is it’s a way of building a future celebration into your wedding day.

Because your wedding day should be one of many celebrations of what you are lucky to have, not the first and last.

And a wine box is one way of doing this (I’m going to share another more budget friendly option at the end of this blog too).

During your ceremony you pop a bottle of wine (or whisky or port, whatever you like!) into a box and lock it up, perhaps with the vows you’ve just made to each other. Perhaps with a special letter you’ve each written the other. Decide when you want to open it up - maybe it’s your first wedding anniversary, your fifth, your tenth, or if you’ve put away a bottle of port or whisky it’s every anniversary and special event or milestone in your relationship.

How long you want to put it away for will dictate what you can put away, some wines will last better than others. Some styles aren’t meant for keeping long term. Others will be fine for a year or two whereas others will only be coming in to their own with seven to ten years under their belts. My advice on deciding what to choose - find a specialist wine store or talk to your favourite vineyard about what would be best. And yes I do have a local wine guy who has given me some great suggestions.

What you want to lock the wine away in is up to you too - you can get a fully functional gift box from most bottle stores for around $20. Or you can get something like these made - these are personalised handcrafted wine boxes with locks made from either beautiful local rimu timber or treated pine/ plywood for those travelling with them.

These ones photographed were all created by my lovely husband, so if you’re interested I can let you know details and facilitate organising one.

And the other option for a way to celebrate in the future is fill a jar with memories. (This isn’t a wedding day job) Little pieces of paper each with ‘remember the time we…’ on them. Take them out over brunch or of an evening and talk about them one by one. We did this one anniversary when the budget for celebrations was pretty much $0 or less. And it turned out to be one of our favourite celebrations.

However you’re choosing to celebrate (both on your wedding day and into the future) happy planning and congratulations!

And who took the photos, so you know which fab photographers to check out?
